The Year of the Tarnished Brands

PR Week has an article about the year of the rebrand. It seems like there are a few tarnished businesses out there besides Blackwater now “Xe”. (Pronounced “Z”).
Name Wire covers the matter and gets into the delicate balance and strategy it takes to rebrand a tarnished business. I have a feeling there are more to come.

California Missions

Part of fourth grade curriculum is to study the Missions of California. They are some of the oldest built architecture we have on the West Coast.
Santa Margarita Elementary and Creston Elementary were fortunate enough to take a field trip to Mission San Antonio at the southern end of Monterey County. It's located on Fort Hunter Liggett military base in a pristine valley once owned by the Hearst family and once the heartland of the Salinan nation.
The self-guided tour was more like a scavenger hunt and gave us a checklist of facts and items to find on the premises; which worked quite well. My Flickr page documents the adventure and beauty of this area. Enjoy.

How to Choose Colors Everyone Likes

Sweet?

Sour?
Is it color intuition? The argument is not whether you have good taste or not, it's whether your color palette, like taste buds; know what's sweet and what's sour. Read Igor Igor Asselbergs interesting color article on Creativepro.com

Fading Roadsign by bekinaz.
Signs like these were like science fiction stories showing you what the future was going to look like. I wish I could travel back in time and be a sign designer from this era. Such freedom and Googie style!
Someday I'll take Route 66 to... somewhere! In the meantime, I'll just go to this Flickr group and check it out.

A surfboard art contest

The winner gets their art airbrushed onto the longboard. The illustration shows top and bottom. I also wrote this diatribe:
Octoboard
Ancient seafarers from Europe to Asia used the octopus as a symbol for the dark mysteries of the ocean and the deep unknown. Their tentacles wrapped around many wooden ships and crushed them like fragile shells. The survivors depicted their perils and fed the lore with fantastic tales.
Today, the tides have turned and we are the threat. The devious tentacles of industry tangle with the generous ocean resources. Petroleum-based companies (including most board blank and resin manufacturers) add to the concoction, materials that weaken the ocean environment. The fisheries are over-harvested and will eventually haul in empty nets.
We as humans may have good intent, but without action it's worthless. Like the tentacles of the octopus, we reach out in all direction with little thought of consequence. The monster of the sea is ourselves, the fear we have is internal, and the sooner we confront it, the better our oceans will be.
  • The longboard is a personal symbol of wisdom knowledge and respect for the ocean.
  • Is that octopus ink or remnants of an oil spill?
  • The fishhook is a symbol for “The one that got away."
  • The plastic 6-pack holder is the classic symbol of our disregard for consequence outweighed by cheap convenience.
Needless to say, I lost.
