Superbowl Sunday is coming up and I have been designated as T-shirt designer for the Montana de Oro Trail Works day. The inspiration comes from the McLeod - the standard trail building tool of the Central Coast Concerned Mountainbikers, the IMBA and CCC Forestry. The roman numerals are a salute to the game of football and a good way of keeping track of just how many of these superbowl sunday trail days there have been!

I gave the overall graphic that pre-worn look that is so popular today. I prefer this trend because I HATE shirts with a big patch of ink on my chest. It makes me itch and break out in a rash (oops, too much information)...

I created this illustration for the SLO Cyclocross 2011 series. I did my best to keep it gritty, show the torture and create a compelling poster with complementary color, linear and pattern dynamics of a Japanese woodblock print.

Below is a slideshow of the process I go through to crank one of these out. Yeah, key word here is crank (touch of sarcasm).

I hate Under Construction pages...

As much as I dislike Under Construction home pages, some clients still insist. These holding pages take away the impact of a new site, dilute the brand and lose potential customers looking for your service; especially when the site is eternally under construction.
When you HAVE to create one, ensure you perk the interest of the visitor by giving visual cues to what to expect from the site remodel. Create relevant searchable text that build optimization in advance of a new launch. Smashing Magazine provides helpful tips to add flair to the "Coming Soon" page. Certainly something is better than the default domain name provider gives (eww). Here is a "Coming Soon" version for Treat Paine Acupuncture.

If you are excited about having the new site, remodel, or idea, take a moment to put some thought behind it.

For those too young to remember, Steve Jobs left Apple in 1985 to start a new computer company called NeXT. At the time, I was marketing for a company called Island Graphics Software which made a design suite called Write Paint & Draw for Sun Microsystems Inc. Sun as well as NeXT were based on the UNIX operating system. Though the computer platform failed, it did create the base platform for modern day macs. Here is a great little trivia article about the graphic designer who came up with the NeXT logo for Steve Jobs.

My client wanted a simple cart to sell his microwave tester on the internets (www.micro-tester.com). Chris at KV Web Solutions found this open source cart called Tomato Cart. Not only does it work well, but the default interface is really user friendly. I think the client will warm up real quick to it's back end features. I'm really happy with the find. If you have similar solutions, let me know.

Sacred Spaces

I signed my waviers and headed out to the ranch yesterday.
I walked the site looking for a vantage. It was tough finding the spot. I had to walk around, look, feel, sit, stand, walk back, go in circles and smell... I felt like a dog looking for a place to poop. I also had to think about the conditions; dry wind coming directly from the west, no shade.
I took a hike to the top of the hill for the 360 vista. The lone oak had a rope swing to nowhere and a couple scattered mortars around it. Not as impressive as the community site below. From that hilltop I could see the freeway to the north, the Asuncion to the east and the Disneyland railroad that envelopes the main property. Looking down at the site, I realized the planview: the site overlooked the village and creek to the east, and had a grand view of a meadow to the west. I hiked back down and found my comfort zone. The area had a horseshoe shaped rock bench about 14 feet long, perfect height to sit on and take in the view. The painting above is the view directly west.
The process of painting was a mental rollercoaster of "Why did I pick such an exposed spot?"; "This is going nowhere."; "My frigging acrylics are scabbing over!", to actual success.
I used two brushes, kept the strokes broad and loose, and abstracted the scene and colors to fit the conditions and mood I was working under.
Favorite part: Flicking paint at the masonite!

I have an interest in California Native Americans and am doing a series called Sacred Spaces - Landscape interpretations of indigenous sites. My aim is to have a dozen paintings and have an event somewhere in the near future. check out some of the paintings at Art Bistro, and site photos on Flickr.

I always thought his logo was straight out of Giorgio di Chirico's sketchbook. The Surfer's Journal has a good eulogy on his legacy and influence. It also mentions the "foam man". I love it.

I'm fresh back from vacation at Lake Tahoe. My mind is still at this wonderful place near Trout Creek. This is one in a series of native sites I have been painting for the last year. I hope to have a dozen for a show sometime in Fall.

Every town needs a gathering spot. Without one there is no heart. In Santa Margarita, it tends to be the Post Office where the community gets their mail. The daily ritual gives us an opportunity to see neighbors and maybe share a sandwich, coffee and conversation. The sad fact is that our little public space is in need and has very little curb appeal except to the town drunk and an occasional bicycle nomad. As an official Adopt-a-Highway Tall Bike Posse Team Leader, I spend approximately 20 minutes in this area picking up strewn cigarette butts, big gulps and faded fliers.
In a visual presentation on my Flickr site, I outlined my proposal. I took site photos, painted a concept sketch and proposed a future solution to the town's public art. Please have a look and give me your comments.
We are fortunate to have civic minded people in this town who care for community. Please visit Santa Margarita Beautiful and participate on 2011 Cleanup Day - May 7th.

I'm doing a little online research for an upcoming bike poster design for a local winery. They will have a wine event based around a killer bicycle race in May. In the past, I've done graphics for cycling events like the Central Coast Cycling Classic, bike art posters, and Tall Bike Builds. including one for Talley Vineyards.

The stuff I come across is amazing. It's both intimidating and inspiring.
If you're not familiar with the History of bike races, a quick search will showcase some classic posters from Europe where the sport originated. There are also some contemporary bike race posters that are on our own continent that play off the history as well, and some stunning photography that captures the thrill of the race. There's some good stuff out there.

Sick? Dying? FRENCH 'ER!

The subliminal suggestion displayed isn't quite what they probably had in mind. Spotted on a billboard on the 101 southbound just north of SLO. I definitely did a double take when I went whizzing by. French is a Hospital located in San Luis Obispo. At 65 mph, no one will pick up on the light serif font that spells it out. On the positive note, I did read it all the second time I drove south to SLO. I'm assuming the intended audience is the local traffic that commutes to work every day.

On the campaign expense side, I see the ad on billboards both northbound and southbound, AND in the local newspaper AND the cash paid to the ad agency who owns the account. Was it intentional? If so - Brilliant! The client has a great sense of humor, and the agency has a sharp designer who knows how turn heads (not recommended on the freeway while driving). So I ask you marketeers out there: Should the client drop the agency? What amends should take place?

This place steeped in surf history will always be the theater for young guns, aspiring to get their moment. This vid clip shows the lineup as it is without any particular pro featured. You see just how tight the pack can be, and how competitive the lineup is. Shot from the beach it does not even touch on the chatter competition and pecking order going on in the water. This year's Pipe Masters will be dedicated to Andy Irons.

CCCMB TrailWerks Poster

When I was assigned this job, and CCCMB told me the trailwork targeted, I immediately thought of American Gothic by artist Grant Wood as the hook. This may be the most parodied art by an American painter.
I replaced the original house with Froom Ranch house, strapped a BMX helmet that fit the farmer's skull so well, traded the pitchfork for a McCloud, and gave the wife a shade hat worn by sun savvy hikers. This classic painting is a cultural icon and has been one of the most reproduced – and parodied – images ever.
I hope this poster catches the community's attention and brings many volunteers out on this special TrailWerks day. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR YOUR COMMUNITY LATELY?

On-Track Studio Curb appeal

Well it's amazing what a pallette of colors can inspire...

The palette that initiated the makeover.

I have worked in this studio for the past two years neglecting the exterior until this summer. It's always been a non-descriptive shed with little (ok, none) curb appeal. The interior is sheetrocked, insulated, painted and can be quite cozy when the weather is acts up. When inspired, the work flows and the imagination is triggered. Though I wish the creative spark does not make the work any easier (sigh).

BOX ART SLO

The City of San Luis Obispo's Art in Public Places Program has commissioned local artists to create masterpieces on 16 utility boxes featured in downtown San Luis Obispo as part of the “BoxArt” program. I was told there were over 30 submissions and 13 artists selected (two were assigned more than one box).

I took a self guided tour to see progress, talk to the artist and post photos on bilbord99's Flickr site. Many were still at it on Day 3.

I think the artists are doing a great job, and the city should be grateful for their time and effort, and hope each and every one of them get great commissions for future work.

BUT...

Where are the artists Jeff Klassen, JA/BC boys, Jon T. Jones, Burly Vreeland, Neal Breton

AND...
Does the art do more than look pretty?

Does it stimulate thought, a reaction, an emotion?

Does it relate to its surroundings?

Below are three versions of the same place. It shows the process of making a beautiful space my own. It also gives me a way to be influenced by the medium, responding to the site and perceiving it in a different way.

The Native Americans found great places to hang out while they ground acorns. This is one of them. Notice the mortar holes in the rock in the foreground.

I forgot a cleanup rag so I sketched on the masonite. I will return and paint it - Pencil and Chalk

For those who missed the On-Track show in December at Ancient Peaks Winery Tasting room, I'm presenting the selected plein-aire works at New Frontiers in San Luis Obispo through the month of August.
Besides the Track series will be a "sneak preview" of a new theme titled Sacred Spaces which depict various places where the West Coast Native Americans gathered and lived their lives. When I reach a good number (a dozen?) I will have a show. Until then you can behold three sites from in and around Lake Tahoe basin.

Paul Rand created some of the most memorable brandmarks in the USA. His playful style was thoughtful, simple, sophisticated and continues to be timeless. In Design, Form, and Chaos, Rand shares “some thoughts and despair about the design of a logo". All I can say is Wow!

He has always been an icon for individuality. Dennis has epitomized the independent free thinking sensitive and in some cases, the dark side of the human experience.

His long list of playing your worst nightmare in films has created a brand unto himself. This of course is the one dimension portrayal of a man who like all humans, has many facets: Artist, Art Promoter, Writer, Independent Filmmaker, and one who did it all through a passion for Art and certainly not to turn a buck. Support ALL the Arts because you love it, because the art speaks to you, and not because it is the cool thing to have, the best investment, or because it matches your decor.

My buddy Steve and I have been playing ukulele for a couple of years now. We have similar tastes in music and ukulele songs. We both trade off singing parts, laugh and and TRY to be consistent. We are The D'Ukes of Margarita. We do traditional, western and contemporary covers. DON'T take us seriously, because we certainly do not take ourselves that way. We are entertaining, engaging interactive and will put the crowd at ease and maybe have an old fashioned campfire sing-along. Get ready for our YouTube premiere coming soon!

NPR has a good article on the origins of the 2010 Olympics. The symbol borrowed heavily from the rock stacks called an inukshuk. They were apparently used to mark a good spot for hunting or fishing. In my experience with rock stacking, they have always meant as a marker or call it ancient tagging. Sort of like saying: "I was here" or "this is the trail" or "cool spot".

Concept Sketch Just for Fun...

I have been pretending to be a musician for over three years. My good friend and I practice and play sporadically at back yard parties, one beer hall and art openings. We now have over 20 songs in our repertoire (though some we play better than others). Our music pulls from Punk, Johnny Cash, Tinpan Alley, Hawaiian and some contemporary medleys and we seem to actually entertain others! We love to pass out shakers and I play solo Kazoo on a few. Our songs include sing-alongs, and our interaction with the crowd is very lively to say the least.

What I'm trying to get at is Entertainment comes from many dynamics and not necessarily have to do with talent. People naturally like to laugh and have fun. What we lack talent-wise, we make up for in entertainment.

Above is a rough sketch for our act. It sort of says what we are about visually, but we need a name. Please help us and think of a name to hang on this logo. Be creative and entertaining. I can't wait to read your replies.

I get sucked into checking this rocker fashion blog for a good hour. It's quite a history that I knew existed, yet never seen chronicled until now. It is part of the brand for sure. En Plein Air Palettes @ Ancient Peaks

The palette units worked great. I was pleased as punch for hanging over a dozen paintings without hammering a bunch of nails. The solution was to pre-mount all the little plein aires onto a palette-like frame. The show was hung using 2 pre-existing nails and adding one of my own. There was no way the owners would have let me put the show up otherwise.

With this tight acrylic-on-masonite-on-palette unit, I can fit it into virtually any coffeeshop, tasting room or reception area; basically anywhere people can take a gander. Who wants it next?

Plein-Aire Landscapes On Exhibit

Sixteen of my selected landscapes will be on exhibit at Ancient Peaks Tasting Room in Santa Margarita. A majority of the landscapes were done over a summer in the Bay Area along what I call the hidden jewels and forgotten landscapes. ON-TRACK evokes something truly west coast, light industrial and from the wrong side of the tracks.

I went on a run on Saturday and brought my Moleskine® notebook to capture a certain spot I came across lately. It is not too far from my house and I am fascinated by places where people gather, especially the Native Americans. This spot sits under the canopy of a very strange oak. I can imagine gathering acorns from it because of the easy access and unusual contortions. What a wonderful playground for a child, and what better way to pass the time away under the shade as you grind the acorns into masa.

Please design a logo for me. With pie charts.

A friend of mine held an event called Boobs 4 Boobs as a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Survivors called Enhancement of Morro Bay. The attendees are a unique, open minded group of people with creativity beyond what most public venues would allow. Imagine cross dress burlesque, meets speak easy, meets the arts. The artwork created for the event had to have a breast theme and were to be silent auctioned that night. I created a 26" boob from a 5-speed bicycle wheel and painted it accordingly.
I delivered and hung it before the party (I could not attend, bummer). It looked great amongst the photography, paingings and sculpture. At 10pm, I get a text message saying my bike wheel boob is up to $205, at 10:30 closing auction price was $250 - top seller! ALL the money goes to Enhancement of Morro Bay.

Exerpt from the invitation:

"Yes, it's that time of the year! Mark your calendars for November 7th, 2009 and please join us for:

BOOZE 4 BOOBS 4

Mayhem and I are proud to host the fourth incarnation of our annual event to raise money and awareness thru a silent auction of community-member donations of art celebrating boobs in a variety of styles. This year we will also be holding a raffle for one of the donated art pieces -- so if you don't feel you can make the event, or can't bid your rent on a picture of someone's boobs [even for charity!], please help support the event by purchasing a $2 raffle ticket and get the chance to take something FABULOUS home!

Epilogue:
The one-night event raised a total of $4240.
$1905 through the event, an anonymous donor gave $1200 and this person's company matched that donation with $1135, Stunning!

The imagery for this one came easy, but as with any image development, the process was deliberate and methodical. The principles of logo design are simple, and with that in mind can be hard to achieve. Without that part of the process, you might as well go and get yer clipart, or better yet do it yourself!

Road ride to Avila Beach...

Today I woke up melancholy. Slow to motivate, just want to sleep in. It's been happening more often than not. The morning air was crisp and the breeze picked up earlier than usual. It's Fall on the central coast with frost on the rooftop and clear, sharp colors in the sky. After gathering my gear I headed into San Luis Obispo to Mitchell Park for SLO Bike Kitchen. There I watched people clean, ask questions and help each other and fix their own bikes. I see and feel the communion between like minded regular people. I feel connected. I miss that.
These are not track bike posers, nor are they the carbon fiber wankers. They want to understand their bikes; what makes them work, or not work and FIX them with their own two hands. I think that's all very good and empowering. This small boost to my spirit was enough to get me on with the ride. I suited up and sprinted through town to the south end and down the frontage road to Avila in good spirits.

There's How to Survive a Depression, the museum of online museums moom -which features collections like cigarette advertising, and a hilarious snippet of regrettable hobbies, jobs and other dull activities. My current favorite: Layer Tennis where firms battle each other in creative Adobe-like activities, and a Collection of Adult Movie Posters from the 60s and 70s.

Target Market: SLO County Land Conservancies, specialty outdoor events and non profits.

Notes: The discovery process generated three concepts. We chose the first, with slight modifications to the topo image taken from the Morro Bay SP trail system mapped by GEObispo.
It was important to have a bold logo that read well in black and white as well as color. GEObispo wanted to align themselves with clients who care about the outdoors. The colors reflect sustainable green practices in the marketing material align GEObispo with like minded businesses.

California Coastal Cleanup Day

Saturday September 19th is California Coastal Cleanup Day. Go to your favorite beach and help with the effort. It's a great way to take ownership, and feel good about doing something positive for your community.
I will be performing community service highway cleanup in the morning with the Tall Bike Posse. Our group participates in the Cal Trans Adopt-a-Highway program on a volunteer basis, and not because I'm trying to work off a ticket!

Creating an image for Kitch...

Kitch comes in many forms and is something dear to my heart. Why? Because I see myself as the living version of that word!
I took on a recent project because I wanted to be a part of the family heritage in some small way. the Rinconada General Store is east of our little town of Santa Margarita and sets in a valley that is truly beautiful in an understated discovery kind of way.
First thing (ok, second thing if you count signing the contract as first) on my list is the discovery process. I researched the location, talked to the client, and responded with something unique to them.
I recently finished this brand illustration that will be used on everything from paper bags, trucker caps and signage to snow globes and camper coffee mugs.

Site photos of the local landmarks like Ronconada mountain. Locals say you can see George Washington's profile, can you?

The heritage of a store owned by the same family for fifty years. Grampa built the Western theme Genal Store and painted it with an effective roadside attraction eye catching barn red with white trim.

Use the visual cues from local surroundings. I love this typeface - it's called Helldorado!

The beauty of a thumbnail sketch is you can leave out unimportant things.

Add a little phrase that grandma used to say and you've got a complete package with a tagline the family will love and is truly unique to the area.

Legendary Skater Jim Muir was injured during a surf session recently. If you don't know your skate history, he was an original Dogtown boy and brother Mike Muir was a band member of Suicidal Tendencies. A fundraiser was held and the website is up. Check it out.

It's the only way I can describe it. Like a pinhole camera, Cynthia can take a contemporary scene and make it look vintage. Its the colors, paint by number style, the soft strokes and the human scale. View Cynthia's paintings at Big Sky Cafe in SLO. The setting works with the paintings. Her East West Ranch really speaks to me. If I were to sit on that bench, I could absorb all the knowledge from that old cypress and be happy.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

I watched The Diving Bell and the Butterfly in utter fascination. Lately I have been living in a hole when it comes to new movies. I caught this one at my friend's outdoor movie theater. It was quite unusual to settle into a movie after an outdoor dinner and festive acoustic entertainment. Directed by artist Julian Schnabel, it told the story of Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby who suffers a stroke and communicates through blinking of one eye. The cinematography is wonderful, and the storyline perspective which starts out like being confined within a diving bell, and as he writes his book, opens up like the metaphor of its namesake. Shepard Fairey - the artist who gave us Hope posters and created an iconic figure popular during the campaign has created a cover for the Rolling Stone music magazine. The illustration was based on a photograph by Pablo Martinez Monsivais /AP Images. So far, no sign of copyright infringement. The image portrays the president with a halo and becomes like the Savior Jesus Christ.

20 years after the Tiananmen Square protests

The power of photojournalism cannot be denied in this picture. It set the tone and gave a symbolic brand to the protests in the Square that day in 1989.
Today is the twentieth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests. This photo will remain a symbol of the protests. The image gets its power from juxtaposition of one human against four military tanks. Each of those tanks symbolize the power and strength of the military. 4 metal tanks agianst 1 sack of protoplasm - Wow. If you look closely, there is a hatch open and a solider peeking out of the first tank. This is probably what saved this protester on this day from becoming a stain on the pavement.
Read your history and remember this day.

I remember a project in design class was to trace a typeface. What was the point? To get familiar with the anatomy of type, the conscious aesthetics, mechanics and fittings that make type work as a family, and create a visual voice on the pages of a book, paper, the screen monitor or other literal surface. It's comforting to know there are still designers out there who can match the typeface to the message.
